Cllr Danny Healy Rae made €762000 in council plant hire contracts
Independent Councillor Danny Healy Rae made €762,000 in plant hire contracts from the County Council in 2007. He is the third biggest earner from haulage and hire contracts in the county.
Top of the list is O Dwyer plant from Camp Cross in Tralee who were paid 1.2 million euro in the period from January to December 2007. Clancy Plant Hire from Knockanure in Listowel received the second highest payment of €784,000. These figures have been released in response to the now annual notice of motion by Cllr Brendan Cronin on money paid to contractors. In total 11 million euro was paid out to over 100 contractors in the county for plant hire and haulage work.
John O Connor Head of Finance says up to 85% of the work carried out by contractors is directly associated with the roads programme.
The cost of contractors is on the increase 6.5 million was paid in 2005, 8.1 million in 2006 and 11 million in 2007. The county council says contracts are awarded based on the suitability of the plant item for the job, its reliability and the level of skill of the operator are all taken into account as well as the availability of a back up service and the rate.
